Prevention and Counseling Ethics (More Info)

Description: All of our courses are approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors, the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification, and National Association of Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Counselors. This course on Ethics is taught using text, narrated PowerPoint, video and mp3 audio. All course materials and reference materials are available free online. The learner objectives are: Learn about different codes of ethics (APA, ACA, AAMFT); Learn about the principles supporting and informing ethical codes (i.e. beneficence); Identify steps in ethical decision making; Define, identify and discuss how to deal effectively with transference and countertransference issues; Identify stressors in the profession and burnout prevention techniques; Clarify personal values and their effect in a counselor’s work; Discuss the role of spiritual and religious values in counseling; Identify cultural values and assumptions in therapy; Identify the characteristics of a multiculturally competent counselor; Explain the purpose of informed consent; Identify counselor’s responsibilities in recordkeeping; Identify ways to reduce malpractice liability; Define and explain the conditions for maintaining confidentiality, privilege and privacy; Explain HIPAA regulations and what they mean to counselors; Learn the laws and procedures to follow regarding the duty to warn and duty to protect children and vulnerable others; Discuss confidentiality as it relates to HIV and AIDS related issues; Define and identify the different types of dual relationships; Discuss the consequences of sexual relationships with clients; Identify other types of potential boundary issues besides dual-relationships (i.e. gifts, bartering etc.); Identify the counselor’s responsibility in dealing with suspected dual relationships; Discuss how professional competence is determined and what the bounds of competence mean; Discuss client’s needs and treatment individualization; Discuss issues in consultation and supervision of counselors; Articulate a counseling stance; Identify ethical and unethical uses of diagnosis; Explain ethical standards in couples and family therapy; Discuss confidentiality, privilege and privacy issues in couples and family therapy; Identify ethical issues in group work; Discuss ways to try and ensure confidentiality in group work; Identify ways to effectively use techniques in group; Discuss the value of non-licensed workers; Understand the value and roles of community mental health programs; Identify the types of involuntary commitment and ethical implications.
